It is one of the drugs which are available over the counter without a prescription. May be you have guessed its name by now. Yes, the drug about which we are going to know is Ibuprofen. Besides treating fever and pains, ibuprofen has many side effects if it is over used. Today, we are going to know the unknown facts and side effects of taking Ibuprofen regularly. But before getting into the side effects, let us have a brief introduction of Ibuprofen.

What is Ibuprofen?

Ibuprofen is one among the nonsteroidal anti – inflammatory drugs, used for treating pain, fever and inflammation.  The forms of ibuprofen include tablets, capsules and emulsions. It can be taken orally (by mouth) or intravenously (through veins). It works by decreasing the hormones which cause inflammation and pain in the body.

Why ibuprofen is used?

Ibuprofen is primarily used to treat fever which includes post immunisation fever, i.e. fever in children after they get their vaccinations. It is also used to treat mild to moderate pains including post surgery pain, menstrual cramps, osteoarthritis, dental pain, headaches and pain from kidney stones. Some inflammatory diseases such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis can also be treated with ibuprofen.

Why ibuprofen is prescribed?

Ibuprofen is prescribed for adults and children as well. The dosage depends on the severity of the health condition for which ibuprofen is prescribed, but the maximum recommended dose for adults is 2.4g / day or 3.2 g /day. It is advisable not to use ibuprofen in children weighing less than 7kg and the dose should not exceed 500g / day in children weighing less than 30kg.

Some of the health conditions for which ibuprofen are prescribed for adults include:

  • Pain

  • Fever

  • Dysmenorrhoea

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

  • Osteoarthritis

The health conditions for which ibuprofen are prescribed for children include:

  • Fever in children whose age is in between 6 months and 12 years.

  • Pain

  • Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis

  • Patent Ductus Arteriosus

  • Cystic fibrosis

Side effects of Ibuprofen:

Besides treating fever and pains, ibuprofen has some unwanted effects. If a person taking ibuprofen finds any of these side effects, he / she may require medical attention. A list of common side effects caused by ibuprofen is listed below:

  • Abdominal pain

  • Bloating

  • Diarrhea

  • Heart burn

  • Indigestion

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Constipation

  • Dizziness

  • Itching or skin rash

  • Shortness of breath

  • Swelling of face, fingers, hands, feet, lower legs or ankles

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. The side effects may vary from person to person.

What happens if ibuprofen is over used?

Over use or regularly using of ibuprofen without doctor’s advice may have adverse health effects. Some of the health conditions and symptoms have seen when ibuprofen is over used are mentioned below:

  • Over use of Ibuprofen or other nonsteroidal anti – inflammatory drugs increases the side effects on central nervous system and can lead to seizures or coma.
  • Heart related health issues such as heart attacks and strokes.
  • Elder adults may suffer from intestinal bleeding.
  • Increased risk of digestive and gastrointestinal problems
  • Visual disturbances such as blurred vision and subjective signs related to adverse drug effects; but will go away when you stop taking ibuprofen.
  • Pregnant women who take over doses of nonsteroidal anti – inflammatory drugs including ibuprofen are more likely to miscarry when compared to the pregnant women who doesnot take these drugs.
