Symptoms of Tonsillitis Everyone Should Know

Tonsils are part of the defense system of our body. At the back of our throat, there are two tissues referred as “Tonsils”. They act as filters and trap the germs that could enter our airways and cause an infection. To fight infection, tonsils produce antibodies.

What is Tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is an infection and inflammation that affects tonsils. While trapping germs, tonsils themselves become infected. This leads to swelling and inflammation. Tonsillitis is especially common in children and can occur once in a while or recur frequently.

What Symptoms can indicate Tonsillitis?

Usually, tonsillitis is often recognised if one suffers from a sore throat. But apart from it, there are many symptoms that indicate tonsillitis and which often misguided as other health conditions. Here is a list of symptoms and how to distinguish whether the symptom indicates tonsillitis or other problem.

  • Sore Throat: A common sore throat is quite painful and usually caused by a virus. Whereas, the sore throat that is from tonsillitis is like a strep throat that is caused by a bacterial infection. It is more painful than a common sore throat and needs a course of antibiotics to control.
  • Difficulty in swallowing: Pain or discomfort while swallowing can indicate many medical conditions. But if a person is affected by tonsillitis, he/she experiences difficulty in swallowing due to inflammation of tonsils.
  • Bad breath: Bad breath is often considered as a result of poor dental hygiene. But sometimes, bad breath can be caused due to tonsil stones. When bacteria, food particles, and other debris get collected in the grooves of tonsils, they harden into a mass and forms tonsil stones. These attract bacteria and causes bad breath.
  • Earaches: Eustachian tube connects our middle ear cavity with the nasopharynx. This tube is responsible for draining away the fluid from the inner ear. When someone is affected by tonsillitis, the swollen tonsils block the eustachian tube causing fluid to back up in the inner ear. As a result, ear aches might occur during tonsillitis.
  • Tender Jaw and Neck: When affected by tonsillitis, the inflammation of tonsils often extends up from the neck and throat, into the jaw. The swollen lymph nodes cause the jaw pain during movement and neck tenderness.

Along with the above-mentioned symptoms, persons affected by tonsillitis can experience chills, fever, headaches, abdominal pain and a scratchy-sounding voice.
